Thorin Oakenshield is the mixture of an epic hero and a tragic hero. He came from a noble birth and is treated with respect due to his bravery and leadership, but he also is cursed by his lust for the Arkenstone, and that fatal flaw clouds his judgment and perhaps leads to his death.

On the journey to the Lonely Mountain, the leader of the dwarves brings the company reach the Lonely Mountains before Durin’s Day, but the dragon flies to Laketown with anguish hoping to wreak havoc upon them, which results in Bard slaying the Great Smaug. Once the dwarves take back the Lonely Mountain, Thorin’s good traits begin to fade away due to his lust for gold and obsession for the missing Arkenstone. But after he finds out what Bilbo did he almost kills him (which he would have never done if he wasn’t under the influence of his greed). But Thorin eventually dies in the Battle of Five Armies. His lust for and his desire for his entire possessions to be only his and his fellow dwarves’, blinds his judgment and perhaps causes his eventual death, but he regains his judgment on his deathbed and parts from Bilbo as friends.
