Chess

Foes enter the game, confidence in hand

But leave with nothing but broken pieces

A simple win by the move of a queen

Had shattered any hopes along with their king

The opening was strong but not for long

As pawn by pawn vanished from the field

The Rook and Bishop cleaned the rivals’ board

And after a quick pin the end seemed near

Then thrust from a rook and parry from a knight

And yet the King would not give up the fight

And despite the bloodless board, you could see

The invisible markings of a war

And yet just one play came to save the day

Brought the enemy clear from extinction

And although it took long the day was won

A check from the Queen sent the killing blow.
